Planning an International Move

Are you planning to move to a new country? There are a few things you need to do before you embark on this exciting adventure.

Documents

Before you move, you need to have your passport, work permit and visa paperwork already approved. Each country has different visas and working requirements, so ensure you have all the details ironed out before you leave home. It is also a good idea to get an international driver’s permit to drive with your current license. Eventually, you need need to get a license specific to your new country.

Cell Phones

Communication in your new country takes some planning. Your cell phone needs to be set up for international calling before leaving home. Otherwise, it won’t work upon arrival. However, this only works as a temporary setup because it is costly to do this long term. Each phone call you make locally would be an international call. The best long-term plan is that after you move, establish a new line with a local carrier.

Medications

Stock up on any meds you take daily. Every country has its regulations regarding the availability of over-the-counter and prescription medication. Plus, it takes a while to establish yourself with a new doctor, especially if you have to wait for health insurance.

Bank Accounts

Not all banks have international branches. You need to set up an account with a new bank before or upon arrival in your new country. If you set it up before moving, you can wire money from your current bank account. If you are waiting until arrival, you need to withdraw your money and close the account before leaving. No matter what you choose, you need to make sure you have access to your savings in your new home.

Moving overseas is an exciting adventure. Proper planning ensures it all goes smoothly.
